Thickening and dewatering hydrocyclone is cylindrical at the top and conical at the bottom. The slurry is fed into the cyclone through the feed port at a constant speed, tangentially along the cylinder. This creates a rotational motion, generating a significant centrifugal force, often tens or even hundreds of times greater than gravity. This centrifugal force throws coarser or denser particles toward the vessel wall, where they travel downward in a spiral path and are discharged through the grit trap. Finer particles and most water follow the spiral path and are discharged through the overflow port. Partially concentrating and dehydrating hydrocyclones feature a siphon device at the top and a fishtail device at the bottom. By adjusting the valve in the siphon device, a small amount of air is admitted into the cyclone chamber, causing a change in the negative pressure within the cyclone. This, in turn, causes the elastic rubber sheet in the fishtail device to change, thereby adjusting the underflow concentration.
